Think About Sex Day

Whilst many of us may have love and romance on our minds this Valentine’s Day, did you know that the 14th February is also national ‘Think About Sex Day’?

This year, Dorset HealthCare’s Sexual Health and Chlamydia service will be helping to promote the awareness day in Bournemouth with a variety of events. Introduced by the Sexual Advice Association, ‘Think About Sex Day’ is organised to provide information about the extent to which sexual conditions affect the general population - with the aim to help improve the sexual health and wellbeing of both men and women.

The Trust’s Sexual Health and Chlamydia team will be holding a variety of events on Friday 13th February at Bournemouth University and will be on hand from 9.30am until 3.00pm to provide sexual health advice and information to university students. This will include general advice, information about contraception and the STI screening clinics that the Trust’s services provide. Students will also be able to take a chlamydia screening test on the day if they wish. Plus, the team will be giving out 'goodies' on the day, including heart key rings, 'love heart' sweets and free condoms will also be available.

A food voucher will also be up for grabs to use at the University Café for students who leave a message on the Sexual Health team’s ‘love board’.

Jo Goodman, Dorset Chlamydia Screening Co-ordinator, commented: “’Think About Sex Day’ aims to help overcome the old fashioned idea that talking about sex is a taboo subject. Discussing sex openly is one of the best ways to improve support and care; our event will be a great opportunity for students to learn how they can better look after their sexual health.”

The Dorchester Sexual Health team will also be distributing heart shaped condoms in the run up to ‘Think About Sex Day’. Every Saturday between 10.30am and 12.30pm the Dorchester team hold a sexual health clinic by booked appointment, with a half hour open drop-in slot following until 1.00pm, at 20 Trinity Street, Dorchester, DT1 1TU. To make an appointment please contact the team on 0300 303 1948.

Dorset HealthCare becomes sole provider to prisons across the south west

From the beginning of October, Dorset HealthCare has become the sole provider for all prisons in Dorset and Devon. The Trust will provide a range of physical and mental health services to HMP Portland, IRC The Verne and HMP Guys Marsh in Dorset as well as HMP Channings Wood, HMP Dartmoor and HMP Exeter in Devon.

The announcement of the prison service contract arrives alongside the recent implementation of the street triage pilot scheme in partnership with Dorset Police – which aims to provide vulnerable people in crisis situations with mental health support – and is further evidence of the Trust’s ongoing mission to strengthen the interface of mental health and criminal justice.

The Trust’s approach to prison healthcare is not just about treating illness, but about helping to rehabilitate and prevent repeat offending.  Primary care health services for the prisons include, GP surgeries and pharmacies, chronic disease clinics, health & wellbeing (including stop smoking courses), mental health nursing, dental, learning disabilities, drug and therapeutic services and palliative care. These services combined provide the prison population with an invaluable health resource through which individuals can access the appropriate level of care.

Jenny Erwin, Associate Director for Specialist Services at Dorset HealthCare, said: “The prison population is an ageing one so prisons are having to adapt to cope with older inmates. The Trust recognises the need to provide facilities and services that address these needs and will ensure that the prison population has access to specialist treatment and care, from diagnosis through to recovery.

“Being announced as the sole provider of these services represents another milestone in the Trust’s continuing development and dedication to strengthening the quality of services we provide to vulnerable people and the wider community.”
