Early Intervention & Prevention Services

What does it do?

The Early Intervention and Prevention Service is a team of Primary Mental Health Workers (PMHW) from a range of clinical backgrounds, who work in locality teams across Dorset. PMHW offer direct work with children, young people aged 0 -18 years and/or their families, who are experiencing mild or emerging emotional health problems, as well as advice and consultation to professionals. DHUFT is responsible for providing these services across Dorset.

What are the service opening times?

Our Primary Mental Health workers are usually available between 08.30am and 17.00pm, however, arrangements can be made with children, young people and their families to have appointments outside these hours.

How can I refer?

Through GP, Multi Agency Professionals such as; School Nurse, Health Visitor, Head Teacher and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO).

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

One to one child and family therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression, parenting work for children with conduct disorders and behavioural difficulties and emotional regulation (anger and anxiety regulation).

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?

We work directly with children and young people aged from 0 -18 years and/or their families, who are experiencing mild or emerging emotional health problems, as well as advice and consultation to professionals.

Children, young people and their families from 0-18 years of age.

As a patient, how do I access services?

How can I get involved / what support groups are available?

Information can be given to the young person and their family upon assessment.

Do you have information for Carers?

Information can be given to the carer upon assessment.

We can offer support and treatment within a safe environment of the patient’s choice.
