Continence Advisory Service - West Dorset

What does it do?

The Continence Advisory Service is a nurse led service which aims to help all people with bladder and bowel problems, to alleviate or cure the problem, or in the event, to manage the problem effectively. The service manages the home delivery service of the supply of continence products (pads) which are supplied when all forms of treatment have failed. We also support family members and health and social care professionals in their role as carers.

The West Dorset Continence Advisory Service is one of two services available within Dorset Healthcare

Univeristy Foundation Trust. We provide a service to the population in the North and South West areas ofDorset.

What are the service opening times?

The office is open to enquiries from 09.00 hrs to 16.30hrs Monday to Friday

The West Dorset Continence Advisory Service is open to referral from any source. Patients themselves can contact us for an appointment as well as all nurses from any discipline, GPs, Consultants, Social services Learning Disability or mental health professionals. Our ‘referral form’ is the favoured method to refer patients to us, but we will accept referral letters with the appropriate information.

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

Full assessment of the problem in a secure, private environment by a specialist nurse.  Promoting continence by offering lifestyle advice, bladder retraining, pelvic floor exercises, Electrical Stimulation and Biofeedback and bladder scanning. The service can facilitate referral to other services for further, specialised assessment and treatment.

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?

Any bladder and bowel problem that is of concern to that person or carer.

Who will I see?

The service has three Continence Advisors, Stephen Miles (Service Manager), Dawn Hewett and Becky Taylor. Sam Davey and Corinne Champkins are our office personnel.

How can I get involved / what support groups are available?

At the present time, there are no support groups in existence but we are very open to suggestions from people who would like to become involved and help us set one up? Please contact us

Written information as well as support is available either on the telephone, or a clinic appointment.

Blandford- Wednesday Fortnightly

Bridport Community Hospital - Tuesday Monthly

Dorchester- Tuesday/Thursday Weekly

Gillingham- Wednesday Fortnightly

Yeatman Hospital, Sherborne - Tuesday Monthly

Weymouth– Wednesday Weekly

Stalbridge – Monday Monthly
