What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

There are two in-patient wards:

St Brelades Ward
St Brelades specialises in the assessment and treatment for patients with mental health problems particularly dementia.  The ward is divided to provide a flexible female and male assessment unit providing single sex facilities within the one ward.

Herm Ward
Herm Ward has designated single sex accommodation and mixed sex communal areas.  It provides intermediate care for patients whose needs are both long-term and more specialised.  The ward is divided into male and female areas providing privacy and dignity for all patients.

Patient care is always specific to a person’s needs, with special attention on preserving their privacy/dignity and improving their quality of life.  We offer additional beneficial facilities that are often not available elsewhere.  These include multi-sensory rooms, which are spaces that are designed to gently stimulate or relax the senses using different aromas, lights, sounds and textures.  We also offer therapeutic activities.

The following facilities are also based at Alderney Hospital:

Intensive Therapy unit (ITU)
The five bedded ITU located on Herm ward provides intensive nursing support and treatment for female patients who have more complex conditions/behaviours.

Haymoor Day Hospital
The Day Hospital provides multidisciplinary assessment, treatment and monitoring for older people suffering from organic and functional illness.  The service enables patients to remain in the community wherever possible, and reduce the need for admission to hospital.

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?

People with organic mental health problems, e.g. dementia.

Who will I see?

There is a mix of qualified nursing staff and skilled mental health support workers working alongside medical staff, occupational therapy and physiotherapy to provide high quality evidence based person centred care.  We also have a Recreational Facilitator who facilitates a range of therapies and activities.
