Primary Care Mental Health Service (West Dorset)

What does it do?

The Primary Care Mental Health Service provides a range of psychological therapies for people suffering from common mental health problems.

Service Delivery Area

We cover the localities of North Dorset (Blandford, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, Gillingham), West Dorset (Bridport, Dorchester and surrounding villages) and Weymouth & Portland.

What are the service opening times?

Monday to Friday - 9am - 5pm

How can I refer?

Patients can refer themselves (see below) However if you prefer to refer them to give us more information see Referral Form in Related Files. This can be faxed to us.

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

We offer one to one sessions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Counselling.

We also have Courses available to teach tools and techniques to help you manage your difficulties, as well as groups that focus more specifically on problem areas.

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?

Common Mental Health problems such as Depression, Anxiety, Panic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and difficulty adjusting to life events.

Who will I see?

Your appointments will be with a qualified psychological therapist. At your first appointment, you and your therapist will decide together which therapeutic approach will best meet your needs.

How can I get involved / what support groups are available?

We work in partnership with Dorset Mental Health Forum, who offer peer support groups.

Do you have information for Carers?

We recognise that being a carer can cause stress, and our service is available to carers.

Where, when and how often are the clinics?

Clinics are held in a variety of venues such as GP Surgeries and our locality bases. We offer appointments between 9am and 5pm Monday - Friday but also offer evening appointments when requested.
