Celebrating 100 years of Learning Disability Nursing

20th August 2019

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Learning Disability Nursing. To celebrate this milestone our team of Learning Disability Nurses, past and present, gathered together at Bulbury Woods Golf Club.

The nurses tucked into a celebratory ‘100’ cake and spoke about their experiences in the past and the positive steps that have taken place by working with people with learning disabilities over the years.

Anita Hazell, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Dorset HealthCare, said: “The event was a great success and everyone had a fantastic time celebrating their profession. As Learning Disability Nurses, we have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities to work in partnership with people who have learning disabilities and their families and carers, and are very proud to make a difference to those that need our support.”

During the event the nurses calculated the years’ service given and between them they had accumulated in excess of 1,090 years’ service. Every nurse was then invited to write what they love about learning disability nursing on a speech bubble. Here are some of the comments staff made…

“I am privileged to support individuals to lead a healthy life, encouraging equality and inclusion. In the 19 years I have been a Learning Disability Nurse, the role has changed immensely, but my passion has not. It is a joy to work with such amazing people.”

“Being able to empower people to achieve their dreams - no matter how big or small.”

‘Having the opportunity to share a small part of people’s lives at a time when they are struggling and making a difference.”

“When you are a Learning Disability Nurse you know that every day you will touch a life or a life will touch yours.”

During this milestone, Dorset HealthCare would like to applaud and say thank you to all Learning Disability Nurses that support local people.
