Remember our veterans safely this VE Day
This Friday (8 May) the nation will commemorate the day when the Allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, and remember the heroes of World War II.
And while the weather forecast is good, Dorset HealthCare, which provides support for both armed forces veterans and current service personnel, is urging people to celebrate this year’s 75th anniversary Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) safely at home – to help our local NHS services in the current battle against COVID-19.
Many of our war heroes, past and present, don’t necessarily have physical scars but need support with their health and wellbeing.
The Trust’s Armed Forces Community Health and Wellbeing Team has provided support to a number of World War II veterans. It provides the armed forces community, including active personnel, veterans, reservists, family members and those bereaved, with help accessing health and social care support.
Liaising with other local organisations, it also helps with housing, welfare and employment issues, and supports the Bournemouth War Memorial Home, which has former service personnel living there from most conflicts from WWII onwards.
Andy Gritt, the Trust’s Clinical Lead and Service Manager for the Armed Forces Community Health and Wellbeing Team, said:
“As we remember the war heroes from WWII, and all those that have and continue to serve our country, we would urge people to remember the sacrifices made by simply staying at home this year.
“By paying tribute safely, we will all be one step closer to enjoying the freedom we all share. This freedom is thanks to the millions home and abroad that gave up so much for our nation.”
