Patients at Alderney Hospital in Poole recently enjoyed a special visit from Mr Kelloggs, a miniature horse, as part of an animal-assisted therapy session designed to support wellbeing and enhance patient experience.

Mental health inpatients on St Brelade’s and Herm wards at the Dorset HealthCare-run site, alongside patients attending the day hospital, welcomed Mr Kelloggs and had the opportunity to stroke, pet and cuddle him.

Animal-assisted therapy is increasingly recognised for its positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, helping to reduce anxiety, improve mood, encourage social engagement, and promote feelings of calm and connection.

Ruth Konda, therapies lead and physiotherapist for dementia inpatients at Alderney Hospital, said:

"The horse brought so much joy to our patients. Animal therapy can offer significant mental health benefits, including reduced anxiety, improved mood, increased social engagement, and a sense of calm and connection. As well as the patients, staff had a brilliant time, and the positive impact was evident throughout the visit."

The visit from Linking Hearts Therapy Horses was warmly received by both patients and staff, creating a positive atmosphere across the wards and day services.
