End of Life Volunteering Project in Purbeck area
Dorset has been chosen to help lead a national drive to develop volunteering programmes in support of the NHS. Helpforce, the national organisation which works to enhance the benefits of NHS volunteers, received 115 applications from trusts around the UK to be involved in its new Volunteering Innovators Programme.
Dorset HealthCare was one of just 12 trusts selected to take part, and will receive £75,000 from NHS England to enable local volunteers to play a bigger part in end-of-life care.
Crucially, this should enable more people to die at home, if that is their wish.
Wareham Surgery GP Dr Ann Marshall said: “I am thrilled that our project has been successful in securing this funding. It means we can develop the service properly and in a timely way so that it can quickly start making a real difference to local people at the end of their lives and for their families.”
Helpforce said Dorset HealthCare’s volunteer initiatives “have been identified as having the potential to make a major impact to benefit staff and patients.”
We are now looking for our first group of volunteers to start providing this innovative new home visiting service
This project will involve volunteers visiting those people choosing to stay in their own homes and lending a listening ear for the family too. You would provide much-valued support to patients and their families by sitting and chatting to patients, helping to signpost them to local services and information about lots of different topics, using resources that we will provide for you. You wouldn’t be involved in any medical care activities. If it proves to be a success then we would like to provide this service in other areas across Dorset to enable more people to opt to be cared for at home in line with their end of life choices.
You will need to be confident that you will be able to cope with the emotional, compassionate and practical demands of the role and to help you do that, we will provide you with specially designed role specific training together with access to ongoing support from our Purbeck Locality Hub and Volunteer Services Teams.
