Bill Batty-Smith - Partner Governor from District Councils

Educated at Sandhurst and the Royal Military College of Science, after completing 10 years of service, Bill worked extensively throughout the Middle East, specialising in Oil and Petro-chemical health and safety, including working in Iran at the time of the 1980 revolution and in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, at the time of the first Gulf War.

On retirement in 1996 went into local politics and in 1999 was elected to North Dorset District Council and has held the seat for three further elections. He has been Chairman of the Development Control committee at North Dorset for the last nine years and has served on the Dorset County Council Health Scrutiny committee for 10 years, for the last two as Vice-Chairman. For three years he was an Independent Chairman dealing with complaints against the NHS in the south-west.

He was awarded the MBE in 1976 for services to the British Community in the Lebanon. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, and a Professional Member Emeritus of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
