Dr Andrew Mayers - Public Governor for Bournemouth

I would like to become a governor to use my expertise, experience and national status as a mental health campaigner to help influence and support Dorset HealthCare. I already have a great deal of influence locally and nationally, so would like to extend that to the NHS Trust that provides mental health care across Dorset. I am particularly passionate about two areas: young people's mental health and perinatal mental health. I already hold posts that support this work elsewhere, so can bring that experience. As a governor, I would help influence the direction of services and support for these two areas. I am also passionate about promoting mental health and wellbeing among staff, especially those that provide mental health services, treatment and therapy. I would like to help extend the good name Dorset HealthCare has, to become recognised as a mental health trust that truly delivers services and support fit for the 21st Century.

I am an academic psychologist, specialising in mental health. I am Patron and Trustee for Dorset Mind and Patron for Bournemouth Samaritans. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, in recognition of my work in mental health. I am advisor to the NCT on perinatal mental health peer support. I run perinatal mental health training for midwives and health visitors. I am a mental health campaigner, working nationally with people like Norman Lamb.
