Are you a carer?
- Are you looking after someone who could not manage without your help? If so, you are a carer, and there is support out there for you.
- A carer can be anyone of any age who is unpaid and supports a friend, neighbour or family member due to their illness, disability, mental ill health, or substance misuse.
Support is available to you as a carer in Dorset, just follow these TWO steps:
Tell your GP that you are a carer & join the GP carer’s register
Enables medical staff to look after you in a better way, as you are caring for someone.
You are the expert in the person you care for.
Having the right consent in place so the GP can share health information, and can support both you and the person you care for.
- enables the practice to send you information relevant to you and your caring role.
- access to practical support such as flexible appointments and more.

Hospital admission
Has the person you support been admitted to either University Hospitals Dorset (Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole hospitals) or Dorset County Hospital? There are carer support services available to help you and support you through your cared for person’s stay.
