Thalamos Electronic Mental Health Act Solution (eMHA)

In April 2024 Dorset HealthCare, in collaboration with BCP Council and Dorset Council, brought Thalamos on board to help improve and digitalise our Mental Health Assessment Pathway. Thalamos will enable clinicians to complete several types of the statutory MHA forms digitally.

Dorset Healthcare will be going live with eMHA in our Trust and partner organisations on 26 November 2024.

What this means for you

You will be able to complete all statutory detention paperwork and CTO documentation digitally, as well as distribute, serve, share and amend online on Thalamos.

You will be able to complete all statutory detention paperwork and CTO documentation digitally.

Statutory Consent to treatment forms and discharge from section forms are also available, all of which can be distributed, served, shared and amended on Thalamos.

Receiving Officers (Clinical Site Managers including Acutes and Ward Nurses)

You will be able to receive, accept and complete all statutory detention paperwork digitally, all of which can be distributed, served, shared and amended.

Benefits of switching to Thalamos’ eMHA platform

  • The need to hand-deliver and/or scan and upload paper forms will be removed, improving efficiency to free up our clinicians and administrators  time to reallocate on activities attributed to direct patient centred care or other priorities.
  • Auto population of particular fields such as patient demographics and clinician signature and name will result in more time efficient completion of forms.
  • Because all MHA forms within Thalamos are managed securely via encrypted email and uploaded against the patient record in RiO, there will be no more damaged or misplaced forms, helping to protect patient confidentiality and reducing the risk of unlawful detention.
  • Faster processing of MHA forms means that service users in crisis receive care sooner.
  • The Thalamos eMHA platform will lead to a significant reduction in errors and rectifications arising from misread handwriting, common mistakes or missed sections/signatures when filling out MHA forms.
  • The ability to amend and rectify errors electronically will result in time savings and quicker completion of errors because this process will be managed digitally.
  • Improved data security and legal compliance will ensure a safer MHA experience for patients and clinicians supporting them.
  • A record of all forms completed within Thalamos will be stored in the authors caseload - allowing them to easier visibility on MHA assessments they have contributed to and in turn allowing them to easily manage and claim forms.

What will happen to paper forms?

Paper forms will remain available and can be used if it is in the best interests of the patient or if Thalamos’ eMHA platform is unavailable or there is no connectivity to the internet.

In all scenarios Thalamos should be used to complete MHA forms digitally.

For users not yet trained on Thalamos and as additional digital MHA forms are added to Thalamos the Mental Health Legislation Office will still accept the old process of analogue forms (paper/digital PDFs).
