Our vision is for healthier lives, empowered citizens and thriving communities across Dorset. This guides us in our purpose to provide integrated healthcare services that empower people to make the most of their lives.

An integral part of this vision is to deliver the most up-to-date, evidence-based care and develop expertise through putting research findings into practice. Since 2010, more than 6,000 people have participated in research with Dorset HealthCare. In 2020-21 alone, 1,635 people took part in research projects across 11 different studies.

We want to make research everyone's business, and offer research opportunities which both patients and staff can get involved in.

If you are happy to be contacted about taking part in research projects, please complete and return our consent form.

We do not share patient information outside of the Trust without explicit consent from a patient. Only authorised staff can access patient records to confirm eligibility for a relevant research study, before contacting the patient to ask if they would then like to take part.

If you don’t want to hear about relevant research opportunities you are free to opt out of receiving this information. You can tell us:

  • in person: tell a member of staff involved in your care

  • by post: Research and Development, 11 Shelley Road, Boscombe, Dorset BH1 4JQ (including your name, address and date of birth).

We will action all opt-out requests as quickly as possible and always within 30 days of receipt.

The national data opt-out differs by providing an opportunity for patients to opt out of their data being used across the health and adult social care system in England which allow the disclosure of confidential patient information  for “purposes beyond individual care”.

The patient’s preference is recorded via NHS England, and anyone who has opted out will be excluded from the data used for research at Dorset HealthCare.

The GP opt-out also relates to national pooling of data from GP surgeries in England and this will also be recorded by NHS England.

You might learn about a research project you are interested in from your GP or other clinician, or read about it online, on a poster or in a leaflet. If you wish to take part in the project you can still do so, despite having opted out, by expressing your consent to take part via your clinician or any contact email/phone number on the website, poster or leaflet. This will in no way affect your national or GP opt-out decision for other data.
