Actinomyces-Like Organisms (ALO)
Actinomyces are bacteria that normally live in the body and are usually harmless.
Sometimes they can be seen on the smears of women who use a copper intrauterine device (copper IUDs) or Levonorgestrel intrauterine devices LNG-IUDs).
They do not usually indicate an infection in the pelvis. Not all reports of ALO are necessarily caused by actinomyces, there is an association with bacteria vaginosis.
In the future, if you develop any of the following symptoms below, seek medical advice immediately:
- pelvic pain/lower abdominal pain;
- deep pain on sexual intercourse
- unusual vaginal discharge;
- vaginal bleeding between periods or after sex;
- occasionally fever.
If you remain symptom free, you may keep your contraceptive device and have it change as planned.
You will not require any more frequent cervical smears.
When you have your device removed or changed, the ALO will usually disappear. Having ALO does not stop you having another device and the ALO may return again.
Remember
- Have your device changed when due.
- See your GP or Sexual Health service if you have any symptoms of infection described previously.
- Have your next routine smear as planned.
