Two major new inpatient mental health developments are underway at Dorset HealthCare as part of the national New Hospitals Programme (NHP). These will help us deliver improved mental health services for children and adults across Dorset through modern, fit-for-purpose buildings and technology.
Using Government funding of £70.57million, we are creating an acute mental health centre of excellence across two of our sites - Pebble Lodge in Alumhurst Road, Bournemouth, and St Ann's Hospital in Poole. Our project includes two brand-new inpatient wards which will allow local people with severe mental health issues to be treated sooner in safe, purpose-built facilities close to home.
The developments will bring:
- increased existing adult mental health (AMH) provision
- additional inpatient beds in a new ward
- improved inpatient accommodation
- replacement male and female adult psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds
- a larger Health Based Place of Safety for detention under Section 136 of the 1983 Mental Health Act
- a new child and adolescent mental health services psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU).
Construction began on both sites in 2024, and should be completed in 2026.
