Adult psychology one-to-one therapy
Therapies offered
We are trained in a variety of evidence based therapies, including (but not exclusively) CBT, ACT, CAT, EMDR, and compassion and mindfulness based therapies. Some therapists are also trained in psychodynamic processes. We will draw on one or more of these therapeutic models when offering individual treatment, which typically lasts 16-24 sessions.
In addition to accessing these therapies with a psychologist, you may be referred to a specialist therapist who has specific training in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), art therapy, mindfulness based approaches or family and systems based support. The CMHT psychologist will liaise with the therapist as part of the assessment process.
Thinking patterns associated with problems in living, that is, those causing misery and distress. The entire course teaches all of the skills sets (mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness) taught in comprehensive DBT. There are three modules, each lasting four weeks. DBT is accessed via the IPTS service in east Dorset, and via APS in west Dorset.
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media to facilitate communication. Art therapists have a considerable knowledge of art processes, underpinned by sound knowledge of therapeutic practice. They use psychodynamic and person centred ways of working with a client.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and introduction to mindfulness are eight week, mostly experiential courses recommended in NICE guidance for the prevention of relapse in recurrent depression. It is also for people with on- going or residual symptoms of depression, after the acute phase. It is especially, but not exclusively, suitable where there is a pattern of overthinking.
