Yeatman Hospital - Sherborne
The hospital was opened in 1887 to honour the jubilee of Queen Victoria. The rent was agreed at 5 shillings a year for the half acre of ground and paid to Sir John Hanham with the understanding that the site must be used as a cottage hospital for the poor.
To begin with, the hospital could accommodate nine patients who were cared for by matron, who worked both day and night and took no annual leave.
Over the 130 years since its opening, the hospital has undergone many changes and has grown to now accommodate 22 in-patients, as well as a day surgery unit, endoscopy suite, outpatients department, physiotherapy department, minor injuries unit and a radiology department.
Despite the many changes, the hospital still retains the ethos that we are here to serve the community and provide the highest standards of healthcare to our patients. The hospital remains very much at the heart of the community and is well supported by the local people and the friends of Victoria Hospital.
We pride ourselves on the variety of services we are able to offer and the standard of care we are able to provide. Many of our staff have worked here for many years and are extremely dedicated in their roles.
We strive to achieve recognition for the work we do and have succeeded in gaining Joint Advisoery Group (JAG) accreditation in our endoscopy department. The radiology department is accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This means we have been assessed by UKAS against all standards of the Quality Standards for Imaging (QSI) which provides formal third-party recognition that an imaging service provider is delivering high quality imaging services. We are currently working towards achieving recognition for our end of life care and care for older people on Hanham Ward.
