Annual physical health checks – SMI Service
Who carries out the physical health checks?
The checks are carried out by Physical Health Support Workers (PHSW) who complete physical health checks which can include brief interventions, health promotion and help with referrals to lifestyle support. They work across both secondary and primary care (GP practices).
What happens in a physical health check appointment?
There are currently 6 mandatory checks that the PHSW will carry out, these include:
1. A measurement of height and weight (BMI or BMI & waist circumference)
2. A blood pressure and/or pulse check
3. A blood lipid, including cholesterol test
4. A blood glucose test
5. An assessment of alcohol consumption
6. An assessment of smoking status
