Thinking of a career in the NHS? Come and find out more

10th April 2018

First-hand knowledge and experience of working in roles across the NHS will be available at a special careers event in Poole next week.

Dorset HealthCare will be showcasing more than 30 different services at an open evening on Wednesday, 18 April, offering detailed information and advice for anyone considering a career in the NHS.

The Trust employs more than 5,500 people in physical and mental health services around Dorset, both in hospitals and community-based settings. Roles range from psychiatrists, school nurses and healthcare assistants to speech and language therapists, health visitors and mental health nurses.

People also work in a host of jobs across the Trust’s support services, including estates management, catering, IT, finance and human resources.

And staff from all these teams – and more – will be on hand during the event to discuss their work, answer questions and explain how people of all ages and backgrounds can find their place in the NHS.

You can also find out more about apprenticeships and work placement opportunities at the Trust.

A similar event last year attracted more than 200 people from around the county and Clover Lake, Vocational Co-ordinator with the Trust’s Learning and Development Team, said many visitors found it a real eye-opener.

“When people have the chance to talk to our staff and get an insight into what they do, it can change their thinking entirely. One young man who was planning a career in engineering ended up wanting to study physiotherapy,” she explained

“Speaking to a professional gives a good idea of what a job is really like – and what sort of training and qualifications you need to do it.

“It will be a very informal evening. Whether you are at school or college and considering your career options, returning to work after a break or thinking of a career change, it will be a great introduction to working for the NHS.”

The careers evening will run from 6-8pm at Sentinel House on the Nuffield Industrial Estate in Poole (BH17 0RB). All are welcome, and there is plenty of onsite parking. For more information about the event, email clover.lake@nhs.net
