Carers Week 2020

The national theme for Carers Week (8-14 June) this year is ‘Making Carers Visible’.

Dorset HealthCare is asking local unpaid carers to recognise the value of what they do - and remember to look after themselves.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many carers will be going through an especially challenging time, and it’s important they seek help when they need it and open up about their own health and wellbeing.

The Trust will be celebrating their massive, but sometimes overlooked, contribution to our communities with a host of online events and awareness-raising activities.

Make yourself visible

Get involved

Pop a poster in your window

Celebrate that you are a carer and get recognised by downloading and printing the Carers Week logo, colouring it in and placing in your window celebrating carers. Download here.

Or if you fancy being even more creative, Carer Support Dorset have come up with their own poster for you to print and colour in. Download it here.

Or use their pre-made one here.

Write a poem

Could you jot down into words how it feels to be a carer? We’d love to receive your poems and share. Email them to pat.wilkins@nhs.net or share via social media tagging in Dorset HealthCare.

Reflect on your experience

During the week, we would like you to reflect on being a carer. Take a photo or video (with consent and permission) and share your thoughts, feelings and tips for others. Use the hashtag #carersweek

Looking after yourself

Top tips on how to look after yourself when caring for others

  1. Take time for yourself: keep fit, see friends, take up a new hobby or learn something new. The Carer’s assessment can be a good way to support you in your carers role
  2. Eat well: a balanced diet is good for your all-round health, fitness and wellbeing. To save time try and plan meals, do an online shop and batch cook
  3. Laugh: having a giggle with the person you care for, or with friends or family members can help. Why not watch our ‘laughter yoga’ video – it is an experience you have to try for some light laughing relief. Click here and here.
  4. Be honest: if you are not coping, tell someone. Don’t make out to health professionals or family members that you are coping if you are not. If someone offers help, say yes to their kindness, its not a weakness but a strength to ask or except help
  5. Stay in touch with others: whether that is over the phone, via social media or face-to-face, talk to other people regularly.
  6. Look out guidance and support: check out our list of helpful websites and information below.

Laughter yoga is a new way to have fun and exercise, while helping to reduce your stress levels and create positive energy. Anyone can laugh for no reason without relying on humour, jokes or comedy. You can feel the benefits on the very first session. Watch a video here and if you enjoy it have another go here.

Five senses

This exercise is called “five senses”, and provides guidelines on practicing mindfulness quickly in nearly any situation. All that is needed is to notice something you are experiencing with each of the five senses. Download the senses here.
