Minor Injuries Units (MIUs)
If you require urgent care, please call 111 or go online for an assessment. This helps us to provide the right support/treatment as quickly as possible, and could save you an unnecessary journey.
If you turn up unannounced at the MIU, you will be assessed but could be directed elsewhere or given an appointment later that day or the next.
If you have an injury that is not life-threatening, you can get help from a minor injuries unit (MIU) rather than going to an A&E department. This will allow A&E staff to concentrate on people with serious, life-threatening conditions and will most probably save you a longer wait for treatment.
We have MIUs at several of our community hospitals across Dorset, offering treatment for:
- injuries to upper and lower limbs
- broken bones, sprains, bruises and wounds to shoulder, upper limbs knee, lower leg, ankle and foot
- bites – human, animal and insect
- burns and scalds
- wound infections
- minor head injuries
- foreign bodies in eyes, nose and ear
- minor asthma attacks.
We can also provide emergency contraception, and may be able to help with minor ailments (check with your local MIU).
All our MIUs have X-ray facilities but opening times vary. We are also unable to X-ray certain parts of the body, or children under the age of two. If possible, please call your local MIU first to assess if an X-ray is required.
If your problem is not urgent, please contact your GP surgery first. You can still call your GP outside normal surgery hours, but you will usually be directed to an out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours period is 6.30pm to 8am on weekdays, and all day at weekends and bank holidays.
