Footwear

For a child, it is particularly important to have good fitting shoes to prevent any long term damage whilst their bones and walking gait are developing.

Always get your child's feet measured by a trained fitter. Both feet should be measured for the width and length.

Everyone needs about a thumb width of space between the end of their longest toe (this might actually be the second one) and the end of the shoe.

Most shops can order extra wide shoes such as H fitting if you ask.

The top of the foot shouldn't be pushing against the top of the shoe. You should be able to roll or pinch the leather that is over the toes and forefoot.

We recommend that you check your child's foot size

  • 0-3yrs every 4-6 weeks
  • 3-4 years every 6-8 weeks
  • 4yrs plus every 12weeks.

Shoes

Aim for a shoe that’s reasonably firm around the heel and a sole that’s fairly solid and ideally made of natural materials.

A fastening mechanism is important. Laces, buckles, a Velcro strap . 

Something that keeps the shoe secure. Why? Otherwise the foot will slide forward in the shoe, the toes get squished and the heel slips up and down. 

Wellies and flip-flops these are great for puddles and the beach but not for long walks.  Pick appropriate shoes for each activity, walking, running, scooting or biking.

Socks

Socks need to fit well, if they are too large they can bunch up and cause pressure problems.  If they are too small they can constrict the foot.

Shoes for orthosis

If your child requires insoles or splint take these with you when you shoe shopping. Ensure that the shoe is deep enough to cover the back of the heel to contain the insole or splint so it doesn't slip. 

Most shoes come with a removable insole and this should be removed to allow greater depth. Ensure that the shoe/ trainer unfastens close to the toes as possible . This will make them easer to put on. Laces would be the best option so they can be tightened from the toe right up to the ankle to hold the foot firmly in the shoe.
