Eating Disorders Service

What does it do?

The service is designed to help individuals and their families overcome different types of eating disorders, including Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa and a typical versions of these disorders.

Bournemouth, Poole and across county of Dorset

What are the service opening times?

Outpatients:  Monday to Friday 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Adult Inpatients:  24 hours a day

Adult Day Patients: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

How can I refer?

Referrals can be made by any health or social care professional, including general practitioners, locality/community mental health teams, paediatricians, dietitians, health visitors or psychological therapies services and voluntary organisations.  Please contact the team directly to discuss referrals: Under 18 on 01202 492415 and over 18 on 01202 492147.  Adult patients in North and West Dorset (i.e. Blandford, Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport, Lyme Regis, Sherborne, Shaftesbury) the initial referral needs to be made to the local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT)

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

The Eating Disorders Service provides evidence based treatment using the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on the treatment of people with eating disorders and their families/carers.  Treatment takes place mainly on an outpatient basis whilst some indifiduals will have day and/or inpatient treatment as required by their needs.  Treatment is provided on a 1 : 1 basis, in groups and to families, again linked to the needs of the person.  Available therapies include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Family Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal Therapy, Body Image and Self Esteem Therapies. 

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?

All different types of eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

Who will I see?

Dependant on need, members of the team include:

Specialist Nurses, Doctors, Occupational Therapists, Dietitian and Family Therapist

How can I get involved / what support groups are available?

Carers Support Group held at Kimmeridge Court on the last Thursday of each month from 7.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
