Children attending schools in the Dorset Local Authority area
As most services are delivered in schools, the availability of the school based programmes and services is during school term times. There are some staff who work all year round and are available to support families throughout the year.
Other professionals can refer in to the service by letter or completion of a referral form. Please contact the area team to obtain a copy.
Members of the School Nursing team visit schools regularly to offer health assessments; health information, advice and support; deliver school based immunisation programmes and other services. They work with schools to weigh and measure Reception and Year 6 children as part of the National Child Measurment Programme.
The School Nursing service works closely with education staff and other agencies to support parents, carers and the children and young people with physical and/or emotional health needs.
The School Nursing team consists of qualified nurses who have completed Specialist training in working with children and young people. The team includes other registered nurses and Nursery Nurses. Children, young people and their parents will see a member of the team dependant on the health assessment or issue identified as needing support from the team.
Parents/carers will be notified of routine health checks and immunisations carried out in schools to obtain consent. The current programme includes the following:
- Reception age - school entry health check with review of general health and hearing
- Reception and Year 6 - growth measurement in line with the National Child Measurement Programme
- Year 8 girls - Human Papilloma Virus vaccination
- Year 10 boys and girls - school leavers booster of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio
The School Nursing team offers regular drop-in sessions in all schools with no appointment needed - please ask at your child's schools for details of when the drop-in sessions are held.
Young people and parents can self-refer to the service at any time via the school, through the GP or by telephone. For contact details for your school nursing team please see section 'Who can I contact to find out more?' below.
