What are the service opening times?

One Thursday morning per month.

How can I refer?

Please refer to surgical outpatients at Swanage Hospital.  The patient will be seen and then listed for surgery after a pre-operative assessment is undertaken to ensure fitness for surgery at Swanage.

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

Day surgery treatment is undertaken, but there is the facility for an overnight stay at Swanage Hospital if necessary.  The operations most often performed are hernias of various kinds, vasectomy, circumcision and haemorrhoidectomy.  Some patients with varicose veins may be able to have surgery here.

Which types of illness/medical condition does the service treat?
  • Long saphenous vein strip and avulsion (if PCT funded)
  • Short saphenous vein ligation (if PCT funded)
  • Inguinal hernia repair (not recurrent or bilateral as per NICE guidelines)
  • Epigastric hernia repair
  • Femoral hernia repair
  • Vasectomy
  • Circumcision
  • Frenuloplasty
  • Excision of epididymal cyst
  • Hydrocoele plication
  • Haemorrhoidectomy
  • Anal sphincterotomy
  • Pilonidal sinus (simple excision, not flaps)
