Westminster Memorial Hospital (Shaftesbury)

What does it do?

Nurse led service assessing and treatment of minor injuries and illness for adults & children.  We offer advise & treatment of lacerations, burns & wounds, musculoskeletal injuries including sprains & strains,to legs and arms and fractures, head injuries, eye injuries, foreign bodies, assessments following  a fall in the elderly. We offer treatment & advise for minor  illnesses such as coughs & colds, asthma, bites & stings, rashes & allergic reactions, earache & sore throats, and Emergency contraception. Following injury/illness we can arrange follow up care with GP, out of hours GP, clinics & refer directly to A&E  or the on-call specialities at Dorchester hospital.

What are the service opening times?

09.00-18.00 Monday to Friday

10.00-16.00 Weekends

last consultation 17:30 Mon – Fri and 15:30 W/E’s and B/H’s , also the units close for 30 mins for lunch. This time varies due to the number of attendees to the units

What functions/treatment and therapies are offered?

The staff are able to request & interpret x rays, apply plaster casts. Close uncomplicated wounds with steristrips, glue or stitches. Advance wound management skills, prescribes limited range of medications: analgesia/antibiotics & anti histamines. Remove foreign bodies from eyes, nose and skin, WE currently have access to x-ray facility between Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. WE can perform dressings out of hours & at weekend if needed to fit around your work & child care needs.

Minor injuries such as lacerations, sprains / soft tissue injuries and simple fractures

You will see a nurse practitioner who has specialised in minor injuries and aliments.
