Prison Healthcare

What does it do?

It delivers directly provided services and subcontracted services to the four Dorset prisons, such as primary care GP & nurse led clinics including mental health; Prison Mental Health Inreach, Integrated Drug Treatment Services ( IDTS), Dental, Ophthalmic, Podiatry, Sexual Health and Physiotherapy services.

What are the service opening times?

8-5 Mon- Sunday in all prisons except Dorchester which provides 24 hour nursing cover

No referrals, service is only for remanded and sentenced prisoners & foreign nationals

Who will I see?

DHUFT employed staff include GPs, nurse prescribers, general and mental health nurses, health care assistants, consultant psychiatrist.

In addition we have the following services who attend on a regular basis: Dentistry, Opticians, Chiropody, Physiotherapy, Mental Health Inreach

As a patient, how do I access services?

You can access services through the prison healthcare application process. Depending on the nature of the problem you will be seen by a nurse or GP, or referred to the appropriate visiting specialist (e.g. dentist) who can help you. For emergencies you can speak to any member of staff who will summon the appropriate assistance

How can I get involved / what support groups are available?

Health promotion activities take place regularly. You can attend prisoner forums to discuss services delivered. You can complete a comments / complaints / concerns form. You can become a wing representative for health. You can seek advice or set up your own group with the help of healthcare staff. You can complete one of user experience questionnaires. You can attend the disabilities forum which has healthcare representation.

Do you have information for Carers?

Please ask to speak to the lead nurse in each establishment should you require specific information or signposting to the appropriate healthcare service

Where, when and how often are the clinics?

This varies between each establishment. Basically operating hours are the same as a GP surgery, with on call advice and referral available through SWAST accessed through prison staff. A variety of clinics operates throughout the week.
