Problems with your hearing aid

Troubleshooting

My ears are sore

  • Perhaps your ear mould is too tight or there are sharp edges on the ear mould. Contact Audiology, they may need to modify or arrange to replace the mould.
  • You may have had an allergic reaction to the ear mould. Contact Audiology, they will need to arrange for a new ear mould in a different material.

My hearing aid is whistling

  • It may be that your ear mould is not inserted correctly. Remove the ear mould and insert into the ear again, use a mirror to check it is in the ear correctly.
  • Perhaps your ear mould is too small. Contact Audiology for a new mould.
  • If your ear mould is cracked or split, contact Audiology for a new mould.
  • If the tubing is cracked, split or stiff, contact Audiology for replacement tubing.
  • It could be that the tubing is blocked with water or wax. Clean the tubing to remove wax or blow through the tubing to get rid of any water or condensation.
  • There may be wax in your ear canal. Arrange for the GP or practice nurse to check and treat if necessary.

There's no sound coming out of my hearing aid

  • Is your hearing aid switched on? Check that the battery drawer is closed and that the hearing aid is switched on.
  • Maybe the battery was inserted incorrectly. Make sure the battery is in properly, with the ʻ+ʼ on the battery matching the ʻ+ʼ on the hearing aid.
  • Perhaps the battery is dead. Find a battery collection point near you.
  • If the tubing is cracked, stiff or split, contact Audiology for more tubing.
  • If your ear mould or thin tube is blocked with wax, clean the ear mould or thin- tube, paying special attention to the end of the tube.
  • Maybe there are water droplets or condensation in the tubing. Detach the aid from the tubing, blow through the tube, tap or shake to remove water.
  • It could be that you are using the incorrect programme. Make sure the hearing aid is not on the telecoil program.

The sound is intermittent

  • Perhaps the tubing is twisted. Carefully try untwisting it.
  • Is there are water droplets in the tubing, tap, shake or blow to clear the tubing.
  • There may be an intermittent internal problem with your hearing aid. Make an appointment with Audiology to have it checked.

The tubing is discoloured, brittle or keeps falling out
